A guide: packing for winter getaways

With a love for travelling in the quieter seasons, winter has fast become my favourite time of year to escape everyday life & explore somewhere new. Dorset is known for its stunning coastline, historic landmarks & quaint villages, making Dorset a perfect destination for those seeking a winter retreat. To ensure you have an unforgettable experience, I have created a little guide on what to pack for your winter holiday down in Dorset.

This one might seem a little obvious but warm clothing is an essential… think:

  • Thermal layers, something I have discovered this winter and has been a game changer on those cold morning dog walks.

  • A good insulated jacket, an investment definitely worth making.

  • Waterproof boots for those wet & windy walks along the coastline

Now you’ve got your essentials covered, time to think about comfort… think:

  • Cute hats, cosy gloves and a trusty scarf.

  • Umbrella, we do live in England after all.

To remember your trip, don’t forget your camera gear:

  • Your camera so that you can capture the breathtaking landscapes of Dorset. Whether you’re using a DSLR or a smartphone, ensure your camera is charged and ready to go.

  • For those stable shots, bring along your trusty tripod.

Walking essentials are a must! Think:

  • Hiking boots: If you plan on trekking the Jurassic Coast or exploring the country, comfortable and durable hiking books are a must!

  • Some walks around the area can take quite a while so bring along your backpack to pack everything you need for a day of exploring such as water, snacks, a map & anything else you may need.

For the days that you don’t want to leave your cosy accommodation, bring along some indoor entertainment…

  • Your favourite book.

  • The puzzle that has been sat under your bed that you’ve been meaning to do but just haven’t had the chance.

  • Maybe you had a new board game at Christmas, bring it along…

  • A journal, this is a helpful one for me… I write down all the ‘busy’ thoughts that come up and deal with them when I return home.

Cosy clothes for those relaxing evenings…

  • Bring your favourite jumpers, leggings, pyjamas and not forgetting your trusty slippers - getting cosy in the evening after a day of exploring is simply the perfect end to a day of exploring.

The joy of staying in self-catering accommodation is you can eat whatever you fancy, so be sure to bring along your favourite snacks.

  • While Dorset offers a variety of culinary delights, consider packing some of your favourite snacks or treats to enjoy during your holiday.

Techy bits, because let’s face it, we still need to stay attached to some sort of normality.

  • Your phone charger

Top tip, ensure you check your bedside before you leave when your holiday is over… this is the most common item that is left behind in our properties.

Any medical supplies you may need.

  • Pop together a little first aid kit of all the medical supplies you may need whilst you’re away… if you’re going to be doing lots of walking, make sure you pack some blister plasters!

Your reusable water bottle & coffee cup.

  • Grab your reusable water bottle & coffee cup, in Dorset there are often incentives when you bring along your own coffee cup & there are also many places you can refill your water bottle when out and about.

So that’s it, you have everything you need to enjoy a wonderful winter getaway in Dorset. By packing wisely, you can make the most of your holiday and embrace all of the elements whilst staying warm comfortable and prepared for all the adventures that come your way.
