Winter.
And just like that, we are heading into winter. The mornings are crisp, the nights are dark & there is magic in the air knowing that Christmas is just around the corner.
Personally, winter is one of my favourite seasons. It’s the time of year that we get cosy, we settle down, and we decompress after the busyness of the summer. However, I know that winter can be a punishing time of year for some - especially for the ones living & working in the city. You got to work in the dark and come home in the dark… the weekends feel hectic with everyone frantically shopping for their Christmas presents and you don’t seem to find the space to switch off.
With that in mind, let me tell you about Winter on the Dorset Coast…
The Jurassic Coast is one of the biggest pulls that Dorset has to offer, it attracts thousands of people from all around the world. The dynamic landscape offers something for everyone… most come in the summer but I’m here to tell you that the Jurassic Coast Path is just as beautiful in the winter. The only difference is, you’ll need a nice wooly scarf to keep you warm & a flask of coffee for when you have a break - but doens’t that feel more magical?
Speaking of magical. Weymouth and Dorchester know how to do Christmas and New Year. The decorations go up and all of sudden, Dorset turns into a festive wonderland, whether you’re looking for a cute Christmas market with handmade goods, a Christmas pantomime or a trip to see Santa Claus on the railway - there is something for everyone. The magic doesn’t stop with Christmas, New Years Eve in Weymouth is known to be one of the best nights out, you’ll need to find a fancy dress costume as quite frankly, you’ll stand out if you don’t - everyone gets dressed up in this little town which is truly a sight to be seen.
For many reasons, Dorset is a very popular tourist destination in the summer. This year Weymouth was named ‘Britain’s Best Beach’ by The Sunday Times so of course, many flock to our gorgeous beaches. However, it’s during the winter that I feel you can truly appreciate Weymouth’s beauty. You’ve got the space to explore, you haven’t got to fight for a car parking space and you can book at the restaurant that you’ve been hoping to visit all year.
& finally, Dorset is a beautiful destination all year round. Spring brings life, baby lambs and daffodils. Summer brings suncream, lots of people and sunglasses. Autumn turns the town golden, with leaves turning a beautiful shade of brown & the kids returning to school. Winter, winter brings magic but a frozen kind. The air is crisp, the beaches are quiet & the pebbles glisten in the morning dew.
